The ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition offers educational programming; important announcements and updates; relevant legislation and policies; and discussions that majorly impact libraries, their roles, and their ongoing transformation.

The 2024 ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition will include opportunities to:

  • Explore the possible futures for libraries, your work, and your spaces when you access more than 200 peer-driven education sessions from library professionals in various topics and formats.
  • Hear from inspiring thought leaders and celebrity speakers on the main stage.
  • Visit the library exhibits space with more than 590 expert exhibitors highlighting the latest products, titles, technology, and services. See 700 established and new authors on nine live stages; attend special exhibitor sessions; get free ARCs; and more. Visit The Library Marketplace for additional details.
  • Be inspired by your colleagues and build your personal network, make new connections, and engage with the most committed and imaginative people in the field.

Here are a few sessions sponsored by the International Relations Round Table and the International Relations Committee:

In addition to the hundreds of conference programs and meetings, visitors from outside the U.S. can also participate in the following programs:

  • International Visitors Center (IVC) —  A place where you can relax, review the conference program, or hold small meetings with new-found colleagues and friends. ALA volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and assist you. A computer with Internet access will also be provided.
  • Orientation — A special introduction to ALA, the conference, and the city of San Diego. ALA members will recommend programs and social activities to help you make the most of your conference experience.
  • International Reception — A special evening reception will be held in your honor so you can meet other international guests as well as colleagues from the U.S.

Letter of Invitation

As part of your ALA conference registration, you will receive an invitation upon registering.  If you need a Letter of Invitation before you register for the conference, please complete the Request for Invitation Letter. The official ALA Letter of Invitation will be used to facilitate the processing of any visas or documents needed for you to attend the conference. ALA, however, is unable to provide financial support for your participation. If for any reason your visa is denied, you have until May 31st to cancel your registration and receive a refund, minus a $50 canceling fee. Registration cancellations must be sent to [email protected].

Travel Visa Requirements

Attendees who require an entry visa to visit the United States must allow sufficient time for the application procedure. Visa requirements often change and vary by country, so be sure to visit the U.S. State Department website for the latest information when planning your trip. As a reminder, visitors traveling to the United States are required to be in possession of passports that are valid for six months beyond the period of their intended stay in the United States.

No other event in the world offers a better opportunity to learn about current issues and trends in library and information science and technology.
